Court remands driver for killing motorcycle passenger

A tipper driver, identified as, Semiu Akanni, has appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates Court, for killing a motorcycle passenger, Waisu Oladunjoke.

According to PUNCH, the prosecutor, Innocent Odugbo, told the court that the defendant had committed the offence on November, 14, at about 7am at Agbotikuyo road in Agege, Lagos state.

Odugbo attributed the cause of death to reckless driving, adding that the incident had involved a Volvo tipper with registration number BO G27 6XA and a motorcycle.

The defendant, who lives in Abeokuta, is facing a one count charge, bordering on manslaughter. The offence contravenes section 18 of the Lagos State Traffic Law, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. S. K. Matepo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with sureties of like sum. Matepo added that the sureties must be blood relatives of the defendant and live within the court’s juridication.

Additionally, she said the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government and must have their addresses verified by the court.

Subsequently, the Magistrate remanded the defendant in Kirikiri prison pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions and adjourned the case till January 9, 2019, for mention.
